Wind Ensemble

Mr. Andrew Magana , Director

Welcome to Tesoro High School Instrumental Music Program.  The Titan music program provides an opportunity for students to develop an appreciation for music and encourages the skills and discipline necessary for achieving musical success throughout a lifetime of experiences.   The information provided  is an outline of curriculum, policies and procedures, concert attire, calendar events, and musician needs.  It is our belief that communication between home and school is vital to the success of our program.

Course Description

This course is for advanced level wind and percussion instrumentalists. Enrollment in the Wind Ensemble is subject to an audition.  Materials and concepts will be presented to students to advance their instrumental techniques and knowledge of music theory and history.  The Wind Ensemble is a performing ensemble and participation in ALL concerts and festivals is required.  This course is aligned with the California State Frameworks for Performing Arts and the National Standards and meets the requirements for Fine Arts for the THS graduation requirements and for acceptance to the University of California.

Grading Procedure

Grades for Wind Ensemble will be based on the following criterion:

·         Daily participation – 25%

Students must have their instrument and materials for every class.  Students who choose not to

participate in class due to illness or medical limitations will be excused for one class period

only.  A note from a parent/guardian will be required to be excused from subsequent periods.

A physician’s note is required if a student can not participate for a week or longer.

·         Performances – 25%   2 - 3  Evening  Concerts, 1 Festivals, other school events

·         Playing tests – 30%  (Repertoire tests and SmartMusic etudes and solos)

·         Written tests and quizzes – 20%

Attendance

New material is presented every day which is crucial to learning.  Frequent absences or tardies will lower the student participation grade (30% of their grade).

Homework

A minimum of 3 hours a week practicing spent working on scales, etudes, solos and ensemble repertoire is required.  PRIVATE LESSONS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and are absolutely necessary for students who plan to participate in music studies in the most advanced ensembles/honor groups and college.

Performances

Attendance at regularly scheduled rehearsals and performances is required.  Absences are excused for Personal illness or death in the family.  It is impossible to “make up” an unexcused missed performance.  In excused absences ONLY, a written make-up assignment will be issued (to be completed within 7 days of absence)

Ensemble Participation Fees and Fund Raising

Each student is responsible for paying a $100 Ensemble Participation Fee. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Music Department fund raisers.  The proceeds of these fees and fund raisers allow us to pay our clinicians, purchase music, instruments, and supplies and keep equipment in good repair.  The Tesoro Music Boosters  parent booster group coordinates and sponsors all fund raisers and will provide information on all fund raisers through letters, email or phone calls.  Families may choose to make a donation to the Tesoro Music Boosters for the entire $100 or a portion thereof. Any amount raised exceeding the $100 will be kept in the student’s Booster club account and can be used by that student for any class related expenses (purchase of instruments, private lessons, music department trips, etc.)

Textbook

To be selected from; Foundations for Superior Performance, Exercises for Ensemble Drill.

SmartMusic software

Each student will receive a copy of the SmartMusic program to install on a computer at home. You will frequently be given assignments that will require using the program to practice and record your efforts and progress.
