Chamber Orchestra Cathy Olinger, Director
Welcome to Tesoro High School Instrumental Music Program. The Titan music program provides an opportunity for students to develop an appreciation for music and encourages the skills and discipline necessary for achieving musical success throughout a lifetime of experiences. The information provided is an outline of curriculum, policies and procedures, concert attire, calendar events, and musician needs. It is my belief that communication between home and school is vital to the success of our program. Please do not hesitate to call or email at any time for assistance.
Looking forward to working with you.
Course Description
This is the most advanced of the string ensembles and is designed for the student who is a highly competent performer. The student is challenged by music of the A, AA concert literature requiring a more sophisticated understanding of complex rhythms, key signatures, and musical terminology. This ensemble performs compositions from all periods of string literature gaining greater proficiency in independent quartet/ensemble and solo performance. Chamber Orchestra is a performing ensemble and participation in ALL concerts and festivals is required. This course is aligned with the California State Frameworks for Performing Arts and the National Standards and meets the requirements for Fine Arts for THS graduation requirements as well as the UC/CSU “f” requirement. Chamber Orchestra is an Auditioned Group.
Grading Procedure
Grades for Concert Orchestra will be based on the following criterion:
· Daily participation – 30%
Students must have their instrument and materials for every class. Students who choose not to
participate in class due to illness or medical limitations will be excused for one class period
only. A note from a parent/guardian will be required to be excused from subsequent periods.
A physician’s note is required if a student can not participate for a week or longer.
· Performances – 30% 3 -4 Evening Concerts, 1 -2 Festivals, Community/School Events, Carnegie Hall Festival 4/07, Awards programs
· Class Assignments – 20% Performance; play/pass, rubric evaluation, festival project, ensemble performance using Smart Music.
· Tests and Quizzes – 20% www.musictheory.net
Attendance
New material is presented every day which is crucial to learning. Frequent absences or tardies will lower the student participation grade (30% of their grade).
Homework
Regular home practice of the music and materials being rehearsed in class is required. Students should be spending a minimum of 4 hours a week practicing on scales, etudes, solos and ensemble repertoire. PRIVATE LESSEONS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and are absolutely necessary for students who plan to participate in music studies in the most advanced ensembles/honor groups and college.
Performances
Attendance at regularly scheduled rehearsals and performances is required. Absences are excused for Personal illness or death in the family. Failure to attend will result in: reduction of grade for that assignment. It is impossible to “make up” a performance. In excused absences ONLY, a written make-up will be issued (to be completed within 7 days of absence)
